Course Descriptions
Russian Summer Camp 2012 - the two-week long session will focus on classic Russian folk tales, songs, poetry, dances, language and culture. Drawing and making art work based on the stories they read will bring the characters to life and help ignite the children's imagination. They will also be introduced to interesting mathematical and logical exercises designed specifically for children in form of games. All this will help keep them entertained during the summer, but most importantly expand their knowledge and make new friends.
After the two weeks the children will put on a show to demonstrate their achievements and to showcase the art work. They will also get to test the parents on their own grammatical knowledge.
Choir - The concepts of proper singing technique, tone, sight reading and blend will be taught, all while building a repertoire of quality choral literature for children’s voices. Selection will be from a variety of styles and cultures.
Music Theory - According to the level students learn notation, time and rhythm, key signatures for all major and minor keys, scales, intervals, chords, cadences, signs and terms. Students learn to recognize by ear and write all these elements. Also, they will learn to analyze the music to help their future performances. The class also includes complete preparation for Certificate of Merit State Evaluation Test.
Music History and Literature - This course traces the development of music from the Middle Ages through the 21st Century. Representative composers from Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic and Contemporary periods of music are studied along with their most famous compositions. Students become familiar with various musical styles and learn to understand the role of music in society through history. Music Theory and History are specialized academic classes. Students’ musical journey will be enriched by opportunities to attend concerts at the San Francisco Symphony, the Opera and/or the Ballet.
Composition and Improvisation - Students will learn how to capture their muse and develop their own ideas through understanding of how the different musical elements come together. Melodic variations, exploration of various forms, notation and orchestration are all explored as means to empower the student composer.
Introduction to Keyboard - Children learn the basic of keyboard grammar: names of the notes, time value of the notes, time signature, rhythm through the music games and singing, learn to play easy songs on the keyboard according to their age. Such a class makes an easy transition to the individual lessons. Students get a strong background and are ready to continue playing any instrument professionally.
Music Theater and Drama - Students will be able to participate in group recreating of songs and scenes from various Broadway musicals. Students learn acting, singing and dancing on stage. Skills that are learned in class will be developed into a music theater performance. September to December students prepare scenes from popular musicals with a stage performance for the Christmas Concert. January to May students prepare a full production of a Broadway musical with a stage show at the end of May.
Chamber Music - Chamber music ensembles will explore the music for trios, quartets, quintets and larger chamber works for 8-10 players. Students will receive private instructions in addition to the group rehearsals. Any piece of ensemble repertoire demonstrating collaborative skills with another instrument or instruments.
Fundamentals of Ballroom Dancing for Children and Adults
Children (3-5 years old)
This class introduces young students to basics of choreography while developing strength, aplomb, proper alignment, musicality, and the grace that is inherent in the form. The program incorporates dance games and rhythmic exercises with an emphasis on developing focus, discipline, and listening habits while stimulating children to dance creatively. This is an excellent introduction for the future study of dance techniques.
Participation in twice a year recitals.
Children (6-8 years old)
This class offers an introduction to International Latin and Standard Ballroom Dancing. Basic steps with an emphasis on rhythm, technique, and early presentation skills in a joyful atmosphere are the main focus of the class. At this level, children learn self-control, body awareness and class structure. Young dancers are introduced to ballroom dance competitions and practice their newly acquired presentation skills. Competitions are in Single and Couple divisions of Beginning or Intermediate levels of the following dances:
Standard Ballroom: Waltz, Quickstep
Latin Ballroom: Cha Cha, Rumba, Samba, Jive
Children (9-12 years old)
Competitive Ballroom
Participation in this class is decided on the level of dancing and at the discretion of the dance instructor. Emphasis is made on International Ballroom Dance technique, rhythm and partnership skills with the goal to participate in International Ballroom Dance competitions. Children learn how to take proper care of themselves, their costumes and shoe wear as well as traveling skills for dance seminars and festivals. Competitions are in Single and Couple divisions of Intermediate or Advanced levels of the following dances of Latin and/or Standard divisions:
Standard Ballroom: Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Quickstep
Latin Ballroom: Cha Cha, Rumba, Samba, Jive
Adult Classes
You will learn how to dance Salsa, Swing, Hustle, Freestyle and other Social and Ballroom Dances. In a short time you will be well prepared for Night Club and Social Dance experience, as well as the New Year Celebrations and Cruises!
Private lessons are available for all ages and groups.
